Barking for Different Purposes

Barking for Different Purposes

ACTIVITY:
What specifically does your dog bark at?

What does each of the bark types sound like?

Listen for and document volume, intensity, pitch, patterns of the barks etc.

Video or audiotape them and play them back if possible to compare the different barks from the same dog.

Jessie barks at strange dogs going by the house, Lucy barks at people approaching the house. Jessie ‘yells’ (a very loud shrill continuous bark) when she is very fearful, yet ‘talks’ (lower pitch, sounds like Wa wa wa wa) when she sees a dog that she’s not too uncomfortable with (for example, a dog that has walked by the house several times now but she has never met). Lucy's bark is more of an announcement and is lower in pitch but loud in volume.

Now you try it!
