The Words we Use Affects the Meaning

The Words We Choose Affects the Meaning

Words that appear to describe individual behavior can affect other people’s interpretations. When observing and recording, it’s best to choose words that describe the behaviors accurately, rather than have an emotional meaning attached.

What do you think of when you read or hear the word “Cower”?
How about “Slink”?

Some other words to consider:
Freeze
Pushy
Patient
Retreat

How about words that denote groups of associated behaviors?
Confident
Dominant
Assertive
Playful
Engaged
Relaxed
Endure
Fearful
Submissive
Appeasing
Nervous
Reactive

Describe each of these interpretations more accurately using specific dog behaviors without adding emotion to them.

Ex: confident:
dog stands upright making direct eye contact. Her top line is flat and feet spaced shoulder-width apart. She moves smoothly with no bounce in her step.
